It’s not just humans that are stressed and reaping the benefits of ultra-trendy CBD oil these days; one-third of pets are also suffering from anxiety and could do with some mellowing out.
Toast, a boutique cannabis brand based in Aspen, Colorado, has branched into animal wellness with the launch of calming Toast Miau and Toast Woef products. Specifically formulated for pets, they are a blend of full-spectrum hemp oil with wild anchovy oil, flaxseed oil and Alaskan salmon oil for added health benefits.
It is estimated that 20 to 40 per cent of dogs suffer from anxiety – particularly separation anxiety. It is increasingly popular for pet owners to give their furry friends cannabinoids to help reduce stress.
Stress: Stress and anxiety are increasingly affecting animals, so a chic CBD brand has catered specifically for cats and dog with pet-focused hemp oil health products
Miau: The cat-specific formula, pictured, and the dog version are enriched with fish oils for extra nutrients – and both products are vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free and free from pesticides
To coincide with the launch of the new pet-specific products, Toast has set up a thunderstorm hotline.
The company revealed that thunder and lightning are a major source of anxiety for animals. The next time a bout of thunderstorms occurs, they have instructed pet owners to email email@example.com and they will receive a free bottle of Toast Woef or Miau.
IS IT SAFE FOR PETS TO USE CBD OILS
Research into the effects of marijuana and CBD in pets is limited, but ongoing.
It is imperative to check with your vet before incorporating CBD into your pet’s routine, particularly if they are on other medication.
CBD is regulated by the FDA and currently there are no FDA approved CBD products for pets. In 2018, hemp, a cannabis plant that naturally has less than 0.3% THC, was taken off the federal controlled substances list.
CBD oil for pets comes mostly from hemp. The final product includes very little to no THC trace, giving animals all the benefits with the least potential for risk.
A study from Cornell University found that 2 mg per kilogram of CBD twice daily ‘can help increase comfort and activity’ in dogs with osteoarthritis.
When it comes to thunderstorms, it’s a combination of the ‘uncomfortable feeling of static electricity’ and the audible volume of thunder that upset pets.
As any animal owners know, thunderstorms can cause pups to run around the house whimpering and looking for a hiding spot.
Dr Nicholas Dodman, the director of the Animal Behavior department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, told Rover.com that dogs may experience numerous shocks from static electricity during thunderstorms.
This explains why they tend to run toward the rooms and places in your home that are grounded – particularly the bathtub, which is considered a calming place due to the porcelain of the bath blocking the sensation of electricity running through dogs’ fur.
Punit Seth, CEO of Toast, said that the brand’s new $37 ‘flavorful fish oils’ are Friend of the Sea certified. They’re also sugar-free, gluten-free, vegan and free from pesticides, herbicides, solvents or chemical fertilizers. Toast’s suite of THC and CBD products are formulated in the heart of the Colorado Rockies using all-natural growing practices.
Toast products have found an audience with the fashion crowd; regularly featuring in glossy magazines and having recently collaborated with Zadig & Voltaire for a pop-up in SoHo.
A recent study by Swedish experts found that when dog owners go through a stressful period, they’re not alone in feeling the pressure as their dogs feel it too.
Dog owners experiencing long bouts of stress can transfer it to their dogs through their emotional bond, which appears to be strengthened by canine training.
Researchers measured the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the hair of both dogs and their owners, and found that they changed shifted up and down in tandem.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THC AND CBD
Together, they are part of the cannabinoid group of compounds found in hashish, hash oil, and most strains of marijuana.
THC is the psychoactive compound responsible for the euphoric, ‘high’ feeling often associated with marijuana.
THC interacts with CB1 receptors in the central nervous system and brain and creates the sensations of euphoria and anxiety.
CBD does not fit these receptors well, and actually decreases the effects of THC, and is not psychoactive.
CBD is thought to help reduce anxiety and inflammation.
Just this week, a three-year-old German Shepherd named Rocco was dropped off at a Texas rescue center by his family, who said that he had become overcome with anxiety and lost weight as he realized his owners were going to have a new baby.
After a woman shared his story online, the shelter was inundated with requests to give Rocco a new home.
And Rocco is not the only dog to suffer from such emotional distress; The American Kennel Club outlines that dog anxiety can manifest in a dog’s behavior in ways such as aggression, pacing, excessive barking and drooling.
Using CBD oil to calm dogs down is increasingly popular, but owners should visit their vet to discuss issues, as prescribed anxiety medication may be necessary.
Other common treatments are teaching dogs healthy responses to uncomfortable situations, ensuring they are getting proper nutrients and exposing them to new experiences and social situations.
Cats also experience anxiety when they anticipate danger from ‘unknown or imagined origins’ according to PetMD.
Common causes of cat anxiety include illness or physical pain, poisoning, fear, trauma, social deprivation or phobias. Like dogs, separation anxiety, abandonment, re-homing or prior neglect can exacerbate the problem.
Classic signs include trembling, withdrawal, hiding, passive escape behaviors, diarrhea or licking/biting themselves.
A veterinarian should be consulted for further diagnosis.
